W. G. Caine 1990

When I was invited to be President of the Old Barrovians Association1990/1991 my thoughts immediately sprang to such prominent former holders of this position. The initial reaction of surprise was soon overtaken by pride and I was only too pleased to express my pleasure and accept the bestowed honour.

It gives me great satisfaction to contribute something to my "old school" to compensate for so many happy memories I have of days gone by.

Most of those memories are, of course, linked with the many sporting occasions, probably about ninety percent if the truth were known, with the odd ten percent, channelled to my scholastic achievements! In fact, sane may say "Bill Caine got on despite going to the Grammar School and not because of it”. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed my time there representing the school for many years playing soccer, rugby, cricket and athletics and finally captaining each team.

Many of my team mates are still great friends and when we meet the reminiscing of certain games and house matches is pure magic: — Ron Slater, Ron Parry, Reg Bazley, Frank Dutton, Eddie Goodwin, Jack Yorks, Alan Parker. I could go on for ever.

Even after leaving school sport reigned supreme, I had the honour of representing my home town at soccer, rugby league, and cricket. The thrill of playing against the Australian rugby league tourists in 1948 and facing Manchester City at Maine Road in the F.A. cup remains one of my fondest memories.

My business life has almost entirely been connected with the Post Office, being a local sub postmaster for almost thirty years and still occasionally doing relief work in this capacity.

This over the years, has brought me many contacts and friends from the local community who have enriched my life immeasurably.

As my presidential year closes I can reflect upon it as a fruitful time for the Society; as we welcome more members, both new and old, and I wish John Adams as my successor as much pleasure as I have gained in the past twelve months.
