John Earnshaw 1984

My school years were 1931 to 1936 and whilst I cannot claim any great academic distinction Barrow Grammar School gave me an education and standards which fitted me for life and I consider myself privileged to have been taught by such dedicated and caring men who gave so many boys such a great start in life.

The industrial climate being what it was in 1936, I consider myself fortunate in obtaining a patternmaking apprenticeship in Vickers and was delighted to find that my journeyman, Bill Tottenham, was also an Old Boy.

Came the war, I served as a Tail Gunner in Bomber Command coming into contact with several Old Boys during that time. I count myself fortunate to have survived when so many of my contemporaries did not.

After demobilisation I worked in London for two years, returning to Barrow in 1947, again working as a Patternmaker in Vickers until that trade was decimated. I then entered the Post Office and remained until my retirement in 1980 when I was Officer in Charge of the Barrow Telephone Exchange. 

For the last 10 years I have been closely connected with local politics, having served on the Barrow District Council from 1976 to 1979 and Cumbria County Council from 1977 to 1981 and hope to have the opportunity of doing so again in the not too far distant future.
