Being asked to be President of the Old Barrovians Association after being a Committee Member for only a short time came as an unexpected pleasure and honour which I accepted gladly.

Attending the Barrow Grammar School for Boys enabled me to make new friends both in social and professional circles which last to this day. My memories of school life are varied and numerous to this day, the cross—country in the rain, being megaphoned to greater effort by over-zealous sports masters, being sent to the Head's office to await judgement. All of these and many more I can still recall vividly in my mind.

Being a member of the Third Scout Troop from Tenderfoot to Assistant Scout Leader remains my fondest memory of being at school. The many camps and expeditions organised and run with clockwork efficiency by those concerned. I enjoyed myself immensely and still manage to do a little walking when time allows even now.

During my time at school I gained sufficient knowledge at ‘A’ Level to allow me to attend City University in London where I studied Ophthalmic Optics. After my graduation I undertook my pre-registration training at Preston at Taylors Opticians and at Preston Royal Infirmary. After passing my professional examinations I returned to Barrow where I now practice in Dalton Road with my father and wife. My two children take up a large amount of my time, a large garden and a number of sports the rest.

During my time as President I have attempted to encourage existing flourishing activities and make change where stagnation was creeping in. I would like to congratulate Geoffrey Hall as President-elect and wish him every success and happiness in his year of office.
