Comment: Ref#: 312: Roger Mitton's inquiry about John Stilwell. I studied the sciences, and particularly biology, with John up to the 6th form. John was a dedicated Elvis Presley fan and we used to rib him about that. He always took his studies very seriously and I've read occasional references to his work as a surgeon over the years. In school days he lived at 47 Newbarns Road in Barrow. He'll be approaching his 80th year if he's still around and it would be very good to hear from him.

Comment: Does anyone recall John Stilwell, who attended BGS 1958-1964, and then went to Liverpool University to read Biochemistry and later went to Oxford to gain a medical degree? He spent some time in Rhodesia, as it then was, and then returned to the UK and became a consultant specializing in burn treatment. He was a good friend of Emlyn Hughes, the Liverpool and England footballer.

Comment: I have just become aware of this website. I attended BGGS from 1945 to 1952 apart from a year at Homelands Grammar School in Derby as my Father was working there.
My Father attended BBGS (1912 - 1919) in what I believe became Alfred Barrow school. I always remember him talking about ‘Boss Harris’ the formidable head who he said would throw the board rubber at any pupil who was misbehaving. My Father was a very good athlete and won virtually all the competitions at school sports day when in the 6th form.
He was apprenticed to Furness Railway and eventually became Area Civil Engineer for the NW and moved to Blackburn.
In 1949 he was President of the OB’s Association. He just missed reaching his centenary when he died in 2000 aged 99.
I was at school when Miss Hillier was Head and when Janet Wells took over in 1948. I remember when Miss Hillier came back from her retirement home in Little Langdale to present ‘Contemplation’ to the school, sculpted by Josefina de Vasconcellos w

Comment: Also in reply to George Metters, I think the master who was in charge of the criss country team at that time was a chap called Larkin but I have forgotten his first name. He succeeded Gordon Whalley. I have posted a photograph of the team, including Mr Larkin, on the BGS Facebook site.

Comment: In response to George Metters' enquiry, I have a suspicion he may be referring to Mr. Leake who taught physics at about that time and appears on the June 1965 whole school photo sitting to the left of Bernard Eales the PE teacher.

Comment: Does anybody remember the name of the Physics master who was around in the early 1960s who was crazy about the music of Mahler? He was a regular at the meetings of the sixth form Gramophone Society and also presided over the Literary and Debating Society for a while, where he often took a perverse delight in having a smoke at evening meetings when we boys didn't dare. He also took responsibility for the cross-country teams, although he never joined us in training! He word glasses and had a kind of slicked-back hairstyle with what one might call a high forehead!

Comment: I regret to inform you of my mother's death. Dorothy Winward (Noble), widow of Frank Winward, ( also ex BGS ) passed away peacefully 3rd December 2018 aged 90.
Mum & Dad lived in London from 1970 and attended many Southern region meetings until the travelling became too much for them. I know Mum kept in touch via Christmas cards with a couple of old school friends. Unfortunately I can’t find her card list to advise people individually. My younger brother and I intend to bring Mum's ashes back to Barrow later this year so she can be “back home”.
