Jim James 1987

Looking back at my life at Barrow Grammar School I would like to mention three people who have profoundly influenced my life.

Under the tutelage of Doug Lewis and Ernie Ellwood I convinced myself that my future lay in the field of chemistry then, when in the 6th form, and with the help of the late Robert S. Wilson, I became interested in radio construction which later gave way to audio and attracted me to serious music.

An apprenticeship in Vickers Works Laboratory in 1934 went on to what has proved to be a fascinating and absorbing career in metallurgy, encompassing almost 48 years with the same company, 20 of which were spent in charge of iron, steel and bronze production.

I became a member of the Institute of British Foundrymen in 1945 and served on Cumbria and Lancashire Branch councils eventually becoming President of the Cumbria section. Apart from these activities I served on several research and development committees linked with the foundry industry and Ministry of Defence.

Travelling has been mainly in the United Kingdom, apart from visits to the USA and Germany in connection with nuclear submarine programmes.

I retired in 1982 and I’m finding that fell walking, photography, foreign holidays and music are gobbling up time all too quickly but fortunately I have a wife who shares my hobbies and interests.

Jim died in 2015.
