I attended Barrow Grammar School from 1942-47.

I did not achieve a great deal of academic qualifications but I thoroughly enjoyed all the sporting and athletic activities available. This was at a time when collecting and trading shrapnel was important! However, these years could not have been easy, when teachers were being appointed and only months later were being called up for war service, and rationing with all the various problems that this meant for families. 

After leaving school, I had two or three different jobs, completed my National Service and then in my mid twenties I went into 'Vickers' where I spent the remainder of my working life.

The job I had immediately before going into 'Vickers' was with Messrs Burt, Boulton & Haywood, Timber Merchants at Devonshire Dock, approximately where Devonshire Dock Hall is now situated.
