Edgar Ellwood 1929


Edgar Ellwood was the son of John Ellwood who was the manager of the Low Wood Gunpowder Works. 

He attended Liverpool University after School, graduating in 1912 and taking up a teaching position at Dublin High School from where he returned in 1914 to be commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers. 

He was promoted Captain shortly after his younger brother Charles' death. Edgar was reported missing in action in March 1918. Imagine how that must have felt for his Mam and Dad! Fortunately, they received word he'd been captured, and Edgar saw the remainder of the War, (and a bit longer before repatriation), as a prisoner in Lahr POW camp, Baden. He took up short term teaching positions in Pontefract and Bedford before joining our school staff in 1920.

Jack Chadderton's excellent school history reports that Edgar Ellwood's nickname was "Ernie". 

He travelled in by train from Haverthwaite every day eventually moving to Thorncliffe Road. He became senior chemistry teacher in 1928 and Deputy Headmaster in the mid 30's. 

Edgar was a leading light in the scouting movement and a local charitable benefactor. The book says he worked himself to death. 

In 1947 he was found collapsed in the Chemistry Lab but wouldn't go home until he'd heard how the boys had performed in the exams which were taking place that day. 

He died a few weeks later aged just 57.
