Canon John Mills 1975

John Mills was at School from 1932 to 1940. Upon leaving school he was awarded an Exhibition at Keble College, Oxford, where he studied from 1940 to 1942. 

He then entered the Royal Navy (Fleet Air Arm) serving from 1942 to 1946, and on his release from the forces returned to Keble College, where he graduated, with Honours in Modern History in 1947. 

From 1947 to 1949 John remained in Oxford, at Wycliffe Hall, and on completion of his studies he was ordained at Carlisle and then served curacies at Cleator Moor (1949-51) and St. Paul's, Barrow (with charge of St. Aidan's) (1951-53).  

In 1953 he was appointed Vicar of St. John's, Barrow, where he served until he became Rector of St. Mary's, Wavertree, in 1957. In the same year he graduated Bachelor of Divinity (London). 

John became the Editor of Liverpool's Diocesan News in 1960 and the Executive Offcer of the Bishop of Liverpool's " Call to Build ' Campaign in 1962. 

In 1963 he became Vicar of Prescot and a member of the Church of England's General Synod in 1970. He was appointed Rural Dean of Prescot in 1972 and an Hon. Canon of Liverpool Cathedral in 1974.
