Barbara Hawkes 2018

I attended BGGS from 1949-1956.

First year, totally awed by the hall, where I saw my first opera. A girl (Marie?) with a lovely voice sang Orpheus. Then the library, small, but perfectly formed!

Miss Brown taught English, my favourite subject, so sad when she died suddenly. Miss Backhouse introduced us to choral singing and madrigals. Ever grateful to Miss Sibson, Miss Robson and Miss Skinner, who never made me feel a fool (P.E., science and maths). Miss Wells combined high expectations with understanding. I think we were very lucky.

After a couple of false starts I trained as a youth worker(!) and worked in the service for some years. Then I got the chance to qualify as a librarian (Newcastle Polytechnic). I was lucky enough to get a job at the then new Lancaster University, where I spent many happy years.

After retirement I did a course in social research methods, and some of us formed a group and assisted academics. We travelled to various places, doing interviews etc, until the money ran out.

Interests: fellwalking, inspired by Dad's Sunday walks, guiding and St. Paul’s youth Fellowship, wild flowers, reading, and local history. Used to be choral singing until I lost my voice!
