Ron Duxbury 1996

 

Ron (BBGS 1960-65) spent a lifetime in Financial Services with National Provincial Bank, Britannic Assurance, Abbey National BS, and Standard Life before taking early retirement at 55. He then spent a few years working part-time with Geoff Smith at John Winders.

Running alongside all this was a broadcasting career which started when he was a founder member of hospital broadcasting station Radio Lonsdale, and he was awarded a life presidency with the station on its 50th anniversary.

Ron was offered freelance work with BBC Radio Furness (later to become Radio Cumbria) when it opened its Hartington Street studios in 1982. He did general reporting work and presented a weekend magazine programme Saturday South.

His love of Barrow AFC led him to become the voice of the Bluebirds for Radio Cumbria, and he reported from Wembley in 1990 when the team lifted the FA Trophy for the first time.

Two years later Ron became a member of the Rotary Club of Barrow-in-Furness, eventually becoming President, and then moving on to take the position of District Governor, covering over 70 clubs in Cumbria and Lancashire in the Rotary Year 2011-12.

Ron married Patsy in 1975 and they have one son, Michael. who is married to Claire. They have two children.

Ron's most vivid memory of BBGS was when Bill Shep walked the corridor between periods with his slow and deliberate gait. Everyone would go quiet when he passed their classroom, only for all hell to break loose again when his footsteps faded away.
