Bill Burgess could catch pigeons - the finest natural athlete I have ever seen.
I was at school with Bill and competed with and against him over many years at BBGS, for Barrow Athletic Club and at Northern Championship levels in sprints and relays .
I have no hesitation in stating that had he concentrated on athletics as a career, he would definitely have sprinted for Great Britain. As it was, Bill's father (also called Bill) was a great League forward who had captained England and toured Australia, so it was no surprise that he chose Rugby as his sport.
Burgess signed for Barrow Rugby League Club in the early 1960s from Rugby Union where he had represented Furness RUFC and Fylde RUFC as well as Lancashire County.
He scored 179 tries in 222 games for Barrow, his hometown club before he eventually transferred from Barrow RLFC to Salford RLFC.
During his career he was assessed as the Best Winger in The World.
Bill can still be seen on the sports field, but somewhat more sedately, as he turns out for Barrow Island at Crown Green Bowling.
Honours
Bill Burgess won caps for England (RL) while at Barrow in 1962 against France, in 1969 against Wales, and France, and won caps for Great Britain (RL) while at Barrow in 1962 against France, in 1963 against Australia, in 1965 against New Zealand (2 matches), in 1966 against France, Australia (3 matches), and New Zealand (2 matches), in 1967 against France, and Australia, in 1968 against France, and while at Salford in 1969 against France.
Bill also won a cap for Lancashire (RU) while at Fylde, and won caps for Lancashire (RL) while at Barrow.
Bill Burgess played in Barrow's 12–17 defeat by Featherstone Rovers in the 1966-67 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 13 May 1967, and played in Salford's 6–11 defeat by Castleford in the 1968-69 Challenge Cup Final Final during the 1968-69 season at Wembley on Saturday 17 May 1969.
Bill Burgess is third in Barrow's all time try scorers list with 179 tries.
