Rita Stansfield 1966-1979

Miss Stansfield was the head of Barrow Girls’ Grammar School from 1966. In 1979, when schools went comprehensive, Miss Stansfield became the first head of Parkview School – formed from Barrow Girls’ Grammar School, Barrow Grammar School for Boys and Risedale School.

She was born in Hebden Bridge, near Halifax and she was the head girl at Hebden Bridge Grammar School. She died in 2009.

Miss Stansfield was a much loved sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt and friend. Her brother, Jon Stansfield, of London, said: “We are a close family and Rita was very dear to all of us “She was a born teacher and she really enjoyed her job.”

Dorothy Bramham, a former head of games who taught at Barrow Girls’ Grammar School from 1966 and then at Parkview School until 1981, said: “Miss Stansfield was an excellent headmistress who was highly regarded. “She was very approachable and she was a very good democratic headmistress.” 

The retired headmistress was a volunteer on the reception desk at St Mary’s Hospice for many years and she was a keen supporter of the charity. Zoe Guest, the fund-raising and volunteer manager at St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Rita was a great supporter of St Mary’s Hospice for many years. She will be sadly missed by all the staff and volunteers here. She was a lovely lady.” 

Miss Stansfield was also an active member of the National Trust.
