MISS WILLING 1940-42

Miss Willing was educated in Sheffield and it was there where she obtained her MA

degree in French. She also attended the Cambridge training College for Women and for a

time was a Research fellow at St Hilda’s College in Oxford where she obtained her B

Litt. She came to the school from King Edward Grammar School Birmingham where she

had been Senior French teacher She was appointed by the Education Committee with a

starting salary of £600 per year.

Her time at Barrow Girls’ Grammar school was very short but she left a lasting legacy.

Miss Auld had ended the old House system. Miss Willing reintroduced it in the school

year 1941-42. The Chronicle of 1942 recorded “ It was finally decided to divide the

School into four houses to be known by the now familiar names of Abbey Fouldrey, Piel

and Rosse. Girls were allotted to the house by lot. Each one had a House Mistress and a

House Captain.” From the House notes it is clear that the inauguration of the House

system was popular with the girls.

Miss Willing left the school to take up a post with the Department of Education in Palestine.
