Elizabeth McCullich 1894-1917

The first Headmistress, about whom we have rather more knowledge, was Miss Elizabeth McCullich who started work as Headmistress of the Girls Higher Grade School in 1894. There are few official records from Miss McCullich’s time and the school magazine had yet to be produced. However, we have the newsletters of the Old Girls' Club from 1912 and after her death the Club produced a special newsletter entirely devoted to her life and work.

She was a Scottish woman, very upright. She came into the physics lab one day, as one of the pupils recalls: "I was there sitting on one of the high stools and of course with being very little I was there swinging my legs and she said, “Don’t make a pendulum of your legs.”  

She was a fine woman and she just had the school at heart, everything worked” 

Mrs M became a student teacher after leaving school and later a Suffragette.
