Twice in recent times the unexpected sound of the school song – Autumn Gold – has triggered ineradicable memories.
Not a word was spoken at the start of Harry Scott’s funeral service; Dr Thomas Wood’s music focussed the attention of all the Old Barrovian celebrants in not only the value of Harry’s lifetime contributions to education in Barrow but their own involvement in the life of the school.
At my retirement party some six years ago in South Essex the jazz band of the Coldstream Guards emerged from Frankie and Johnnie’s Jail to the unmistakable sounds of Autumn Gold, again the catalyst of the value of memories.
My term as President has already, at half-term - been enjoyable – undemanding and enjoyable, and I look forward to supporting future Presidents. However I am somewhat concerned that the average age of our associates is a little on the mature aside and would encourage colleagues to introduce younger members – the Lisdoonie Elexir Is guaranteed to be efficacious. Perhaps the message is crystallised in that little allegorical verse of that famous old boy (not of Barrow Grammar School)’ Cecil Earl Tyndale Biscoe:
“It isn’t discussing or staring of fussing
Will coax us a crop from the day.
It’s draining, manuring, persisting, enduring,
It’s patiently pegging away.”
